VA disability

I have just received VA disability.have to go to the VA hospital to be evaluated. This will take approximately 2 1/2 hours to drive their and another 4 to 5 hours to get through the bull and then maybe one hour or less with the doctor. I am grateful that I am on VA disability but now I have to learn all the ins and outs of the government again. I do get some nice things like credit towards my wheelchair van, my wheelchair and other things. But with any government program you have to fight for everything you get. Now I just have to do a lot of reading and get with people who are in the system.

Talk to you late,

I am doing this with speech recognition so some of the syntax will be incorrect please bear with me.

It is easy to get you carry permit even if you're in a wheelchair. First check with your local Sheriff and see what you have to do to get a carry permit. Some states are opening carry other states are concealed carry, you must find out what your state requires. my state of Alabama is a concealed carry state, and the Sheriff and each county has a little bit different process you must go through. I am lucky that my sheriff believes in the Second Amendment and does not make it hard on you.

Once you find out what is required to get to carry permit you want to pick out the type of weapon you will carry. You will be going for a pistol or a revolver. You do not want to be John Wayne or dirty Harry and get the biggest handgun they have as you will not practice with this. You will want to get a handgun that you can control the recoil. Myself I use a Ruger SR9, I will be getting a Ruger SR9C. These are both 9 mm pistols and I can control the recoil on both of the pistols.

Some people like revolvers better than pistols. A 38 caliber or the judge that is a 45 colt or a 410 shotgun shell. Both of these are easy to conceal on the body.

The next thing you have to decide is what kind of holster you would use. I myself use of fanny pack. A lot of people say these scream pistols. But a person in a wheelchair it is very common to have a fanny pack. Another good way to carry is to use a belly band. But you want to pick out the type bolster that you are comfortable with and that you will carry the weapon at all times. A weapon locked in the safe does you no good if you need it. I carry my pistol all the time, that is in the house and when I go out.

I do know that some people do not like the subject but I have been asked to talk about this. It is your right to protect yourself, your home and your belongings. But it is not your right to chase somebody Down the St.and shoot them. We should have the same types of weapons that the military uses so that we can fit in easily.

When you do get your permit you want to practice and get training on how to use your new weapon. I myself train with the local police and get training from a an NRA instructor and practice at least 2 to 4 times a month.

Another thing you must do is be able to use the weapon when you have too. If you cannot shoot to kill a person then do not get the carry permit. If you must think twice before using the weapon you will be killed.

A lot of people think the police will protect us. But try this exercise. Take your phone and imitate that your dining 911, then count 5 seconds this is the minimum time it takes to get through. After you do this count 10 seconds as this will be the amount of time it takes you to tell the operator what is going on. Now add 6 min. to this time as this is the standard response time of the police to get to your house. It takes a person less than 4 seconds to break into your door and then one second to kill you. Another 3 min. to rob you and then get away. As you can see the police have not had time to get to you to help.

Weapons are for some people but not for everybody make your choice and then go with it. Remember to practice and get good training. Just because you have a couple rifles and you practice just before hunting season is not the same.

Good luck to you and if you have any questions please contact me.

Each state is different for what you have to do to get a concealed carry pistol license. Some states are shall issue, may issue, will not issue or all legal residents may have without a permit like Alaska. A permit holder must be a resident of the state of the approving state. Some States do not issue as some of the northern states.

Once you find out what your state requires then you can go about getting your license. Now some states require that you take a class and perform on the shooting range. Other states do not require this. But if your state does you can get a concealed pistol permit if you are in a wheelchair as they do make allowances for this. My state does not require to take a written test or any firing test. All I had to do was fill out a form to show I was not at the felon and the reason I wanted the license. I stated that I was in a wheelchair and I wanted the pistol permit for protection.

The main thing is that you have upper body strength to hold the gun. It does no good if you cannot hold the pistol or remove it from the holster. Even though my state does not require me to take a shooting test I do practice at least one time a week. I believe that everybody that owns a weapon should practice put that weapon whenever they can.

So even people who are disabled and in a wheelchair can get their pistol permits for concealed carry. In most states you do not need a permit to have a gun in your home for self-defense or to take it to the range.

In my next blog I will talk about hunting while disabled. Happy shooting to all of you that would like to as is not closed to us. Target shooting is a wonderful sport that I do participate in.
