Tim Tebow headed to New York to be a backup quarterback, gas prices creeping up to $5.00 a gallon, and the Supreme Court taking on Obama Care, where do we start? I’ll start with The Highest and most Supreme Court of them all, and say Tebow is confident that The Supreme Judge has his best interest in mind, and will clear the way for a successful path. Secondly, the court of public opinion, coupled with the daily strain on our pockets will demand a fast track to once, and for all move forward with the Keystone Pipeline, and allow development of refineries in our own backyard. Thirdly, this week the U.S. Supreme Court begins hearing arguments on the constitutionality of President Obama’s’ signature legislative effort, Obama Care. Let’s keep it simple, and not get lost in the weeds, which from my vantage point is what politicians do, and courts have to untangle. In my opinion, the issue is the right of any government elected by the people to mandate anything against the peoples will, thus infringing upon our freedom(s) to choose. Keep a watchful eye on this one, as it could have far reaching affects on the disabled community, primarily payouts to Medicare providers, and the affordability of same.
We wake up this morning to news that cocaine was a contributing factor in Whitney Houston’s’ death. It is an unfortunate truth that fame, and fortune, mixed with the readily available drug of choice for those who but glance at willing and panting star gazers is not a remedy for the fragile human condition. It is also a sad commentary not one who trailed behind her was willing to stand in the gap for her, or confront her about her self-destructive behavior. In my opinion, this tragedy is another example of the long, and far reaching tentacles of disabilities. There are those seen, and unseen. My friends let us all put our hands to the plow and run the race to the finish line and be an encouragement to one another. In the words of Barbara Streisand:”people, who need people, are the luckiest people in the world”.

A few years ago, before my wife, family, and friends finally convinced me to quit being a stubborn, macho man, and use a manual wheelchair; I was traveling outside the country. On this particular trip I was also loaded down with bags, and struggling down an endless walkway, trying to find the right gate, so I could connect to the right fight for my final destination. I was huffing and puffing, and not only battling the human traffic, the heavy baggage load I was carrying, but also the relentless spasticity that has been my lifelong companion, when out of nowhere I get tapped on the shoulder by a uniformed airport official. He wasn’t rude, he was just straight and to the point when he asked me to step over to a table that was obviously going to be used for an official search, and pat down. The first question was of course: “why me, then, “what have I done”? He meticulously went thru everything I carefully packed, and after he was satisfied I wasn’t a threat of any kind, sent me on my way. I got the same treatment on the return trip, at the same airport, with the same results – I was not guilty of contraband, nor was I a threat of any kind. Weeks after the anger, and frustration subsided, I concluded as distasteful as that experience was, and still is to those in the present tense, it is a necessary evil in this day and time, and I, a member of the Disabled Community am subject to the same scrutiny as my able bodied brethren are.
